Frigidaire is a solid brand and makes great dishwashers that hold up well over time, but even reliable appliances can run into issues. The good news is that most common Frigidaire dishwasher problems follow similar patterns with fixes you can do at home.
Whether your dishwasher isn’t cleaning properly, won’t drain, or keeps stopping mid-cycle, working through the likely causes will usually point you to the fix. Here are nine common problems and what to do about them.
1. Dishes Aren’t Coming Out Clean
If your dishes are coming out with food residue, grease, or a cloudy film, the spray arms are the first thing to check. These rotating arms distribute water during the wash cycle, and their small spray holes clog easily with mineral deposits and food particles.
Remove the arms, rinse them under warm water, and use a toothpick or thin wire to clear any blocked holes.
Next, clean the filter at the bottom of the tub. Frigidaire dishwashers have a filter system that needs regular cleaning, and a clogged filter reduces wash performance. Also confirm you’re using a quality detergent and a rinse aid, since hard water and low-quality detergent are often the cause of poor cleaning results.
2. Dishwasher Not Draining
Standing water in the bottom of the tub after a cycle is one of the most common Frigidaire dishwasher problems. Start with the filter. Remove it, rinse it thoroughly, and reinstall it.
If the filter is clean, check the drain hose at the back of the machine for kinks and confirm it has a high loop or air gap to prevent backflow.
If water still won’t drain, the drain pump is the likely cause. Run a drain cycle and listen for the pump. If it is silent when it should be running, it has either lost power or failed and will need to be replaced.
3. Dishwasher Not Filling with Water
A dishwasher that starts a cycle but never fills with water is usually dealing with a water supply issue or a failed inlet valve.
Check that the water supply valve under the sink is fully open. Then inspect the water inlet valve, which opens electronically to let water in and can fail or become restricted by mineral buildup.
If you hear the dishwasher trying to fill but very little water is coming in, the inlet valve screen may be clogged with sediment. Turn off the water supply, disconnect the inlet hose, and rinse the screen. If the valve tests badly on a multimeter, replace it.
4. Dishwasher Stops Mid-Cycle
A dishwasher that stops partway through a cycle is usually dealing with either a door latch issue or a control board problem.
The door latch sensor tells the machine the door is closed. If that sensor is faulty, the machine may stop.
Check the latch for visible damage and test whether it is engaging firmly. If the latch is fine, try a full power reset by switching off the circuit breaker for 60 seconds. If the problem persists, the control board may need assessment.
5. Dishwasher Leaking Water
Leaks from a Frigidaire dishwasher typically come from the door seal, a loose hose connection, or the pump housing.
Start by inspecting the door gasket around the door frame. This rubber seal can dry out and crack over time, especially around the bottom corners. If you can see gaps or damage, the gasket needs to be replaced.
If the door seal looks intact, check under the machine during a wash cycle. Leaks from underneath usually trace to a hose connection or a pump seal.
6. Dishwasher Making Loud or Unusual Noises
A certain level of noise during operation is normal, but grinding, banging, or high-pitched squealing indicates a problem.
Grinding during the wash cycle often means something has fallen into the sump area and is being caught by the spray arm or pump impeller. Stop the cycle, remove the lower rack, and check for foreign objects such as broken glass or small utensils.
Loud humming or buzzing typically points to a worn wash motor. If the noise is coming from the drain phase, the drain pump motor may be failing. In both cases, motor replacement is a reasonable repair.
7. Detergent Dispenser Not Opening
If you find undissolved detergent in the dispenser after a cycle, the dispenser door is not opening at the right time.
The dispenser is triggered by a small spring-loaded mechanism that releases during the cycle. If the mechanism is coated in detergent residue, the door can stick.
Clean the dispenser thoroughly with warm water and a small brush. If the door opens freely but still does not open during cycles, the wax motor or solenoid may have failed and can usually be replaced.
8. Dishwasher Smells Bad
A persistent smell from your dishwasher is almost always caused by food debris trapped in the filter, the sump, or the door seal folds.
Remove and rinse the filter under running water, scrubbing it lightly if needed. Food particles that are not cleared regularly can produce strong odors.
Run an empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar placed upright in the lower rack, then follow with a dishwasher cleaning tablet.
Clean the filter every two to four weeks and wipe down the door seal regularly to prevent buildup.
9. Error Codes on the Display
Frigidaire dishwashers display error codes when the control board detects a problem. Common codes include:
- i10 for water fill issues
- i20 or i40 for drain problems
- i30 for leaks
- i60 for water heating issues
Start with a full reset. Open the door, press cancel, close it, and wait 60 seconds.
If the code returns, check your user manual or look it up using your model number for guidance.
