Although no one likes to see their trusty dryer displaying an error code, they can be very helpful. Instead of simply stopping working, the error code lets you know exactly where the issue is located, which makes fixing the problem far simpler. If your Speed Queen dryer is displaying an error code, take a look at this guide – we’ve got the most common issues, as well as some simple fixes you can try.
Note: Some of these codes apply to pay-per-use dryers instead of personal-use dryers. If you have a personal-use dryer, disregard any codes relating to a card reader or coin vault.
This guide applies to all common varieties of Speed Queen dryers, including:

General Error Codes:
Alarm – An attempted break-in to the coin vault has been detected.
ERR / Err – There is an obstruction in the coin vault. To fix, check for jammed coins or foreign objects.
OFF – The dryer has attempted to shut down after experiencing an alarm error, likely due to an attempted break-in to the coin vault.
Micro-Wand Errors
The micro-wand is used to configure and program commercial dryers, so disregard this section if your dryer is for personal use only.
E:00 – Try re-aiming the micro-wand.
E:01 – Make sure the micro-wand is aimed at the infrared communicator.
E:02 – The micro-wand was moved too early, try aiming it again.
E:05 – The micro-wand has detected an invalid code, re-aim the wand and try again.
Control Board Errors
These are some of the more serious error codes which relate to a problem with the control board.
E:07/ E:08 – This means a serious issue with the control board has been detected, and the entire control board needs to be replaced. You can call in a professional repair technician to help you, or you can order a replacement part that is compatible with your Speed Queen dryer and do it yourself.
Temperature Sensor / Thermistor Errors
These errors mean there is an issue with the temperature sensor or the thermistor. A thermistor is a type of temperature sensor. To resolve either of these errors, the faulty part will need to be replaced.
E: OP or OP – The electrical circuit of the temperature sensor or thermistor is open. The sensor needs replacing.
E: SH or SH – The temperature sensor or thermistor has shorted and needs replacing.
Card Reader Errors
These errors all relate to an issue with the card reader when using a commercial Speed Queen dryer. If your dryer is for personal use only, disregard these error codes.
EC:00 – Communication error. Try the card again.
EC:02 – The connection timed out. Try the card again.
EC:03, EC:05, and EC:06 – All of these errors suggest there is an issue with the card being either invalid or incompatible. Ensure that the correct card is being used. EC:19 – The card reader is not communicating. Power down the Speed Queen dryer, then power it up again to see if the error has resolved. If not, it may mean there is an issue with the control board.
EC:20 – The card is unreadable. This can be due to grime or oils building up on the card reader. Ensure it is thoroughly cleaned, then try again.
EC:21 – The wrong security code has been used with the card.
EC:23 – The maximum value of the card has been exceeded. Ensure that you stay within the limit of the card.
EC:25 – EC 29 – The card reader is malfunctioning, and may need to be replaced if the error persists.
EC:31 – A hotlisted card (a card that has been flagged due to security concerns or fraud) has been inserted into the card reader. The machine will automatically destroy the card.
EC:50 and EC 56 – There is an error with a loyalty purse card being used by a customer. Try the card again, and if the error remains the card may need replacing.
Infrared Errors
These errors relate to the infrared reader attached to the machine.
EI:00 – A communication error has been detected. Try aiming the micro-wand again to see if the error persists.
EI:01 – There has been a bad transmission of data. Try re-aiming the micro-wand.
EI:02 – The micro-wand has timed out. Reposition the wand and try again.
EI:03 – This code indicates the data is incorrect for the machine type. Ensure all data is correct and that the software has been updated.
EI:04 – Expecting Upload Request – Re-aim micro-wand and try again.
EI:07 and EI:08 – There was an error writing to RTC or EEPROM. The control board may need to be replaced to resolve the issue.
EI:0F – The infrared is disabled. Try manually enabling it, then try the micro-wand again to see if the error has cleared.
Other Errors
If there is no error code showing, but the decimal point on the far right of the display is lit up, this indicates a network communication error. To fix this:
- Wait one minute to give the error time to clear.
- If nothing happens, disconnect the dryer from its power source, wait one minute, and then power it back up.
- If the error still persists, it’s time to contact a repair technician. The network board may be faulty and need to be replaced.
