What does the H1 Error code mean?

An H1 error code on a Frigidaire refrigerator indicates a temperature sensor issue, specifically related to the freezer compartment. This error occurs when the freezer temperature sensor detects an unusually high temperature, which may be the result of a sensor, cooling system, or defrost system malfunction. 

The H1 error code advises you to check the freezer’s temperature and investigate any potential root causes of the temperature going above the acceptable range. There are five major causes of this error code, which we shall go through in detail here.  

1. Faulty temperature sensor

To find out if a malfunctioning temperature sensor is causing your Frigidaire fridge to show an H1 error code, you’ll need to examine the sensor’s performance. The temperature sensor, also called a thermistor, is in charge of monitoring the freezer’s temperature and sending signals to the fridge’s control board.

  • First, unplug the fridge for safety. Locate the temperature sensor, which is usually inside the freezer compartment or behind the back panel. Look for any visible damage or loose connections.
  • To test the sensor, you’ll need a multimeter. Detach the sensor and use the multimeter to measure its resistance. The resistance should vary according to changes in temperature. Consult your fridge’s manual for the proper resistance values at different temperatures.
  • If the temperature sensor turns out to be faulty, you’ll have to replace it. Buy a compatible replacement part and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to install the new sensor.
  • Once you’ve replaced the temperature sensor, plug the refrigerator back in and keep an eye on its performance.
  • If the H1 error code is still showing, move on to the next step in our guide. 

2. Defrost system malfunction

To find out if a defrost system malfunction is causing your Frigidaire fridge to display an H1 error code, you’ll need to examine the defrost components. The defrost system ensures that excess frost doesn’t accumulate in the freezer, which could impede proper cooling.

  • Unplug the fridge for safety before inspecting the defrost system.
  • Check for excessive frost buildup inside the freezer or on the evaporator coils, indicating a defrost issue.
  • Locate the defrost components, usually found behind the freezer’s back panel, including the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and defrost control.
  • To test the defrost heater and thermostat, use a multimeter to check for continuity. If either component lacks continuity, it’s likely faulty and should be replaced.

The defrost control (timer or control board) might also be malfunctioning. If you have a timer, manually advance it to initiate the defrost cycle and check if the heater activates. For a problem with the control board, you might need a professional to diagnose the issue. Replace any faulty components with compatible parts, following the manufacturer’s instructions, or contact a professional appliance repair technician for assistance.

3. Cooling system issues

To check whether cooling system issues are causing your Frigidaire fridge to display an H1 error code, you’ll need to assess the various components involved in the cooling process. A malfunction in the cooling system can lead to higher temperatures in the freezer.

4. Door seal problems

To find out if door seal problems are causing the H1 error code, you’ll need to examine the seals or gaskets on both the refrigerator and freezer doors. Damaged or worn-out seals can cause cool air to escape and warm air to enter, leading to increased freezer temperatures and triggering the error code. 

  • Visually inspect the door seals for signs of wear, damage, or gaps. 
  • Test the seals by placing a thin piece of paper or a dollar bill between the seal and the door frame. Close the door and attempt to pull the paper out. If it slides out easily, the seal may not be providing a tight closure.
  • Check for proper door alignment. If the doors are misaligned, they may not be sealing correctly.
  • If your door seals look intact but dirty,  try cleaning the seals with warm water and a mild detergent. Dirt or debris on the seals can prevent a tight closure. 
  • If cleaning doesn’t help, consider replacing the damaged or worn-out seals. 
  • You’ll be able to tell if the door seals were causing the issue if the H1 error code  now goes away.

5. Inadequate air circulation

Inadequate air circulation can cause your Frigidaire fridge to display an H1 error code. To diagnose this, you’ll need to examine the airflow within the appliance. Proper air circulation is essential for maintaining consistent temperatures in both the refrigerator and freezer compartments.

  • First, inspect the air vents between the freezer and refrigerator compartments for obstructions. 
  • Check the space around your fridge. Ensure there’s adequate clearance between the refrigerator and walls, cabinets, or other appliances, as recommended in the user manual.
  • Assess how items are organized  within the fridge and freezer. Overpacked or improperly stored food can restrict air circulation.
  • To fix air circulation issues, start by clearing any obstructions from the air vents. Rearrange items inside the fridge and freezer to allow for better airflow. Avoid overpacking, and ensure that items aren’t blocking vents or touching the back wall. Adjust your refrigerator’s placement, if necessary, to provide proper clearance for airflow around the appliance.

After addressing the air circulation issues, plug the refrigerator back in and monitor its performance. If air circulation was the issue, the error code should now be gone.
