Washer Repair

There’s nothing more frustrating than opening your washing machine to find a pile of sopping wet clothes. When your Samsung washer isn’t spinning, it throws a wrench in your laundry day. At Authorized Service, we’ve been providing expert appliance repair in the Dayton, Ohio area for nearly 90 years, and we’ve seen this issue many times.

The good news is that many of the reasons a Samsung washer won’t spin can be fixed without a service call. Before you pick up the phone, here are some of the most common causes and how you can troubleshoot them.

1. Unbalanced Load: The Most Common Culprit

Modern Samsung washers have sophisticated sensors that will stop a cycle if the load is unbalanced. This is a safety feature to prevent the washer from violently shaking or damaging itself.

  • Error Codes: You might see a “Ub,” “Ur,” or “UE” error code on the display.
  • How to Fix: Simply open the door and redistribute the clothes evenly around the drum. Avoid washing a single heavy item, like a bathmat or a large blanket, by itself. It’s better to wash it with a few towels to help balance the load.

2. Clogged Drain Pump Filter

If your washer can’t drain the water properly, it won’t be able to initiate the high-speed spin cycle. A clogged filter is often the reason for poor draining.

  • Location: The drain pump filter is usually located behind a small access panel on the bottom front of your Samsung washer.
  • How to Clean:
    1. Place a shallow pan and a towel under the access panel to catch any residual water.
    2. Open the panel and you will see a small rubber drain hose and a large round cap.
    3. Pull out the rubber hose, remove the plug, and let the water drain into your pan.
    4. Once drained, twist the large filter cap counter-clockwise to remove it.
    5. Clean the filter of any lint, hair, coins, or other debris. Also, check inside the filter housing for any obstructions.
    6. Reinsert the clean filter and secure the cap.

3. Check the Drain Hose

A kinked, bent, or clogged drain hose will also prevent your washer from draining and, consequently, spinning.

  • Inspect the Hose: Gently pull your washer away from the wall to ensure the drain hose isn’t crushed or sharply kinked.
  • Check for Clogs: Make sure the hose is inserted correctly into your home’s drainpipe (usually about 6-8 inches) and is not creating an airtight seal, which can cause a siphoning effect.

4. Faulty Door Latch

For safety, a washer will not spin if it detects that the door is not securely closed and locked.

  • Error Code: A “dE” error code often points to a door lock issue.
  • How to Check:
    1. First, ensure there is no clothing caught in the door preventing it from closing fully.
    2. Wipe down the door and the latch mechanism to remove any dirt or residue.
    3. If the door is closing properly but the error persists, the door latch assembly itself might be faulty and may need to be replaced.

5. More Advanced Mechanical Issues

If you’ve checked all the above and your washer still isn’t spinning, you may be dealing with a more complex mechanical issue that often requires professional diagnosis. These can include:

  • Worn Drive Belt: The belt that connects the motor to the drum can wear out or break.
  • Failed Motor Coupling: On direct-drive models, this part can break from stress.
  • Suspension Problems: Worn suspension rods (on top-loaders) or shock absorbers (on front-loaders) can cause severe balance issues that prevent the spin cycle.

These repairs involve disassembling parts of the washer and are often best left to a professional.
